What are the training & qualifications of a
Dentist Anesthesiologist?
Dentist Anesthesiologists comprise a group of
dentists who have completed a minimum of
two years of full-time postdoctoral residency
training in anesthesiology. The current
training programs develop highly competent
practitioners who can carefully evaluate a
patient, devise & conduct an appropriate
anesthetic plan, and safely manage
complications that may arise. Additional
information may be reviewed @

Offering any form of sedation is meant to
improve patient experience and thus result in
practice enhancement.  While oral sedation can
be a valuable tool, there are a number of
limitations. Unpredictable results, an inability
to titrate and prolonged post operative sedation
can defeat its purpose of improving patient
care. The only way to allow for delivery of
precise titration, known predictability,
immediate onset and controlled duration of
action (within minutes) is when a practitioner
has access to the complete range of sedation
modalities. Dr. McCarty can offer the ideal
anesthetic while allowing you to concentrate on
the dental procedures at hand.  When working
in collaboration with Dr. McCarty, you can
assure patients a drastic improvement in;
effectiveness, safety & recovery, and as a
result …
patient satisfaction.
What can a Dentist Anesthesiologist offer to
your practice?
How do the sedation methods employed by
Dr. McCarty differ from traditional analgesic
means such as local anesthetic, nitrous oxide
or enteral (oral) sedation?
By utilizing the gold standard of ambulatory
anesthesia agents, efficacy, safety and post
operative recovery are all vastly improved.
Rather than the “hit or miss” approach of
enteral sedation, an anesthetic can be
tailored to the exact needs of a patient &
practitioner. The entire spectrum from a
mild anxiolysis to general anesthesia can
be
titrated as desired
.
What level of anesthesia/sedation is routinely
used in most dental offices?
With the ability to titrate IV medication,
patients are placed in a relaxed, comfortable
state. The level of sedation is tailored to the
patient’s response to specific aspects of
treatment. It is routine for a patient to reach a
deep sedation   ( i.e. for extraction) and
quickly return to a relaxed but responsive state
for such procedures requiring some patient
cooperation (i.e. occlusal adjustment).
Will this affect my current dental malpractice
liability policy?
A dentist's liability coverage does not change
when utilizing the services of a dentist
anesthesiologist. This endorsement holds
true even for the major northeast dental
liability insurance carrier, Eastern Dentists
Insurance Company. EDIC does not condone
(nor insure) the use of many common oral
sedation agents.  I feel this speaks volumes
in regard to the increased safety of the dual
practitioner anesthesia care model in
comparison to the other techniques
currently employed. Confirm @

In conjunction with Dr. McCarty’s newly BORID
devised “mobile facility permit”, an office is
responsible for supplying the same
components needed when administering
nitrous oxide, in lieu of Dr. McCarty. These
basic requirements enhance the ability of an
office to manage potential emergent events
on a daily basis. Follow this link to obtain a
list & cost of each component.

What is required of the dental office in terms of
equipment, medication, supplies or permits?
Dr. Patrick D. McCarty is a dentist anesthesiologist. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California
School of Dentistry and completed a residency in anesthesiology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, in New
York City. After practicing in California post-residency, Dr. McCarty relocated home to New England, where
he now provides anesthesia services in many dental offices throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Dr.
McCarty's patient population includes all types of patients – especially those who are medically compromised
and dental phobic. Dr. McCarty also serves as member of the part time staff of the Franciscan Hospital for
Children Department of Anesthesiology. The primary goal of Dr. McCarty's practice is to make safe and
effective anxiety and pain control widely available to the public. The level of anesthesia care available
includes a full spectrum (ranging from mild anxiolysis to general anesthesia).

Dr. McCarty is a member of the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists, the American Dental Society of
Anesthesia, the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology, the California Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists,
the American Dental Association, the Massachusetts Dental Society, the Rhode Island Dental Society and the
California Dental Association.
How does a Massachusetts dental office go
about acquiring an Anesthesia Facility Permit
“D” issued by the MA BORID?
Further information can be found @
www.zzzdmdcom/MAFacilityPermitProcess
Dr. McCarty has aided in the completion of
numerous facility permit applications and his
office would be happy to help a prospective
office through the process. The office is
responsible for the everyday basic emergency
set up while Dr. McCarty supplies all required
aspects for administration of anesthesia &
sedation. Components can be viewed @
www.zzzdmd.com/Dental-Sedation .
The office of Dr. McCarty handles all
preoperative consulting, medical and/or dental
insurance reimbursement submission along
with subsequent administrative aspects
directly with the patient. Patients can expect
direct reimbursement from their insurance
provider within 30 days of claim submission
(based upon benefits of policy). Dr. McCarty
participates in MassHealth for pediatric (less
than 21 years of age) patients.
What is the cost of Dr. McCarty's services and what
type of administrative process is involved in
scheduling an appointment?
Over the past year, Dr. McCarty has established working relationships with
a number of MA dentists, including restorative practitioners and every
facet of specialty practice. Together we have worked toward providing
access to care for many patients. With our combined efforts we can assure
a safe, comfortable experience for your patients. If you identify a patient
in need of such treatment, we would greatly appreciate your referral. We
