What Type of Anesthesia is used in most cases?
The type of anesthesia used will depend upon the age and physical condition of the patient as well as the
type and length of the surgery. The medications are completely individualized to each patient to ensure a
pleasant and safe experience. Typically, Intravenous anesthesia/sedation places patients in a relaxed,
comfortable state, allowing dental care to be provided without fear or anxiety. There is little if any memory
of the procedure. Unlike general anesthesia, this level of sedation will allow for patients to respond to their
dentist’s directions. This enables completion of treatment in a very short amount of time. The greatest
advantage of intravenous sedation is the ability to reach the desired level of sedation within a matter of
seconds allowing for ideal patient comfort and safety.
